Living On Campus

Housing Office
51 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA 02138-3722
(617) 495-4024

On-campus housing is available to students in eight- and four-week Summer School sessions. Campus residents live in Harvard College dormitories and undergraduate Houses. Many dormitories are more than a century old. Recent renovations have made them more comfortable while maintaining their historic ambience. Most buildings are divided into entryways—a stairway or hall linking several suites, which consist of two or four bedrooms with an adjoining common area and bathroom. Entryways are coed, but suites are single sex. Suitemates come from the United States and abroad, and an effort is made to place English-speaking students with students whose primary language is not English. Roommate requests cannot be honored.

Dormitory rooms contain a bed, mattress, pillow, dresser, bookcase, desk, and chair for each student. Students provide their own linens, desk lamps, wastebaskets, and other furnishings. There is one telephone with local service per suite. Students make long distance calls using credit or calling cards and may purchase AT&T prepaid cards at reduced rates when they arrive to campus. Students may rent bed linens, fans, answering machines, computers, and refrigerators from Harvard Student Agencies (HSA). Laundry machines are available in many dorms, and laundry services may also be purchased from HSA. The dormitories are not air conditioned, and students may not bring their own air conditioners to campus.

Harvard College undergraduates or recent graduates serve as resident proctors. Living in the dormitories, they keep general order and help students adjust to college life by advising them, suggesting cultural and recreational activities, and guiding them around Boston and Cambridge.

Secondary School Program students are required to live on campus or with their families. Students enrolled only in the Institute for English Language Evening Program, GMAT S-1, or ENGL S-302 are not eligible for on-campus housing. There is no housing for couples or children.

Immunizations. Students who live on campus must comply with Massachusetts immunization regulations and submit Form IM (download form*) by June 11.
