Each year Harvard Summer School accepts a large number of high school students who have completed their senior, junior, or sophomore year. Secondary School Program (SSP) students enroll in Summer School courses and receive college credit, which is transferable toward a future undergraduate degree at most colleges and universities. Students in residence live together in Harvard College dormitories in and around Harvard Yard, with Harvard undergraduates as proctors. Some SSP students attend the Summer School as commuters or as distance learners.
Featured academic experiences for SSP students include the Math Program, Drama Program, and Writing Program, as well as Summer Seminars. SSP tutors, trained Harvard undergraduates, are available to support SSP students taking courses on campus. Also of interest to SSP students is the College Prep Program, which includes talks about college selection and admissions, trips to New England colleges, workshops on test-taking and writing the college application, and a large college fair.
Another vital element of the SSP experience is the rich variety of extracurricular activities available in the summer. These include intramural sports such as sailing, tennis, and swimming; musical opportunities such as the orchestra and the chorus; two dances, a trivia bowl, and a talent show; and site-seeing trips to Boston and around New England.
Whether living on campus or commuting, SSP students are encouraged to take advantage of the many academic, cultural, college preparatory, athletic, and social resources of Harvard Summer School. For further information or to request an SSP catalogue and application forms, please visit the SSP website or contact the Secondary School Program by e-mail, phone, fax, or mail.
