The Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute is a rigorous eight-week academic program organized by Harvard Summer School and the Ukrainian Research Institute. Participants enroll for 8 units of undergraduate or graduate credit and select from the following courses: HIST S-1512 Modern Ukraine, Late Eighteenth Through the Twentieth Century; UKRN S-Aab Beginning Ukrainian; UKRN S-B Intermediate Ukrainian; UKRN S-C Advanced Ukrainian; UKRN S-125 Independent Ukraine: Politics, National Identity, and Democratization; and UKRN S-131 The Myth of Kyiv: A City Through Centuries and Cultures.

A calendar of events supplements the academic offerings of the institute. The planned program for 2006 includes guest lectures by prominent faculty, roundtable discussions with visiting scholars on current events in Ukraine, and cultural presentations, such as screenings of contemporary Ukrainian films and readings by Ukrainian authors.

Application. Students must be 19 years old or have completed one year of college to apply. Exceptional high school students may be considered through the Secondary School Program.

To apply, students submit the Summer School registration form, the nonrefundable $50 registration fee (payable to Harvard Summer School), a separate Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute application form (available on the institute’s website), and the supplementary materials that are listed on that form by May 26 to Patricia Coatsworth, Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute, 1583 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge MA 02138. International students must include Summer School Form F. If they are requesting an I-20 from the Summer School, they must submit all materials by May 1. Request a Harvard Ukranian Summer Institute application form by calling (617) 495-7833. Online application is not available.

Full tuition is $4,400. The institute offers its program for a reduced fee of $2,500 for 8 units of credit. Students with demonstrated financial need may qualify for further fee reductions but must apply by April 17 for consideration. Admission is based on the applicant’s academic record, a letter of recommendation, and an essay.
