Special Studies in Administration and Management
Special Studies in Administration and Management (SSAM) courses are designed to provide students with practical techniques for decision making within businesses and other organizations, such as nonprofit entities. The focus is on mastering skills immediately useful to successful business operations. The courses also introduce evolving technological, managerial, and practical insights that can improve business practices over the long term.
Courses for Teachers
Harvard Summer School offers opportunities for continuing education, professional development, and intellectual renewal and enrichment to K–12 educators. These courses are brief and intensive, meeting during short sessions. They combine content-based instruction with pedagogy by encouraging deep engagement with the subject, fostering discussions of instructional approaches to material, and, in some cases, offering opportunities for curriculum development. The following courses are offered for graduate credit and noncredit.
- MATH S-300 Math for Teaching Arithmetic
- MATH S-310 Graph Theory: Investigating the Mathematical Process
- LAST S-300 Latin American Studies for Teachers: A Survey of Latin America, Past and Present

Summer Seminars
Summer Seminars are inspired by Harvard’s renowned Freshman Seminars, which for many years have provided entering Harvard freshmen with an intense academic experience of the highest level. Enrolling a maximum of 15 students, Summer Seminars are offered over a wide range of subject areas, including the life sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Lectures and talks by visiting experts are planned and, in varying ways, each seminar emphasizes small-group instruction, namely, close attention to writing, an expanded opportunity for classroom discussion, and the opportunity to do independent research under the direction of a senior member of the Harvard faculty.
Distance Education
The Summer School offers a handful of online courses in which videos of course lectures, along with other course-related material, can be viewed by students anywhere in the world. Registered students, including those in the Boston area, may attend lectures on campus or watch them online.
Writing Courses
The Summer School offers courses in expository and creative writing, journalism, and professional writing. All courses are run as small workshops and emphasize writing, reading, and revising; classes meet twice a week for two and a half hours, with three individual conferences outside of class. In addition, the school sponsors a magazine of student work; a reading series featuring students, faculty, and distinguished guest writers; and workshops on writing topics, such as “Writing College Application Essays” and “Writing with Sources.”
