This introductory course in the basic vocabulary and grammatical patterns of Japanese emphasizes all four language skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—and covers hiragana, katakana, and roughly 200 kanji. In class, grammar introduction is followed by pattern drills and conversation practice in smaller sections. This is an intensive course requiring high motivation.

This course is designed for people with little or no background in Japanese to develop basic conversational skills as well as basic reading skills in daily life situations. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, students are able to have survival-level conversations and to recognize simple writing.

This is a second-year course in reading and speaking Japanese to follow JAPA S-Aab or an equivalent year of elementary Japanese. The emphasis is on basic grammar patterns of Japanese. Simple readings are introduced on various topics drawn from Japanese history, culture, and society. These readings, which are chosen to familiarize students with authentic written Japanese, are supplemented by intensive oral drills and videos on related topics. Approximately 600 kanji are introduced beyond those covered in elementary Japanese. The course is a rigorous one, requiring a substantial time commitment. Prerequisites: Thorough knowledge of basic grammar, active mastery of kana, and acquaintance with at least 200 basic kanji. All students must pass a placement test given the first day of class.

The goal of this class is to develop the ability to read scholarly Japanese accurately and at sufficient speed to be a useful tool in research. The course assumes a high level of kanji knowledge, and by the end of the course students read academic materials relevant to their own research. Prerequisite: JAPA S-102 or the equivalent.
