Christian Ireland preserved and reshaped pagan myth and epic, as well as native social structures and customs. Later Irish folk tradition reflects this complex inheritance. Students examine topics such as legends of goddesses and women saints; Ireland's sacred geography; deities, fairies, and heroes; and folk ritual.

The emphasis of this course is on learning to speak and read modern Irish (Gaelic). The course introduces basic grammar, vocabulary, and conversation. Students read simple prose and verse texts and learn a number of songs and proverbs.
