Harvard Summer School welcomes international students from abroad, and students who are currently studying at other US colleges and universities. If you are an international student interested in attending the 2009 Harvard Summer School, it is important to begin preparing for your summer as early as possible.

Study options at Harvard Summer School

English language study

You can improve your English language skills through a variety of courses offered by the Institute for English Language (IEL) Programs. Intensive full-time programs are available at all levels of proficiency for students who are at least 18 years old; a special full-time program for high school students is also available. Evening courses are offered for local students interested in part-time study. Learn about the Institute for English Language Programs.

General courses

General courses are offered in a wide range of subjects. If English is not your primary language, you must provide proof of English proficiency to enroll in these courses (see information below).

College program for high school students

The Secondary School Program welcomes applications from high school students who have completed 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in spring 2009.

Requirements for study

Proof of English proficiency

If your primary language is not English and you wish to take general program courses at Harvard Summer School, you must meet the English proficiency requirement by earning a minimum score on the TOEFL or IELTS.

Deadlines

You should take one of the tests as early as possible, so that you can submit your score before the deadline that applies to you.

Visas for full-time study

An F-1 student visa is required for international students who will be enrolled full time (8 undergraduate or graduate credits or a noncredit Institute for English Language intensive program). Learn about the visa guidelines and how to get an I-20.

Immunizations

To attend the Summer School while on any type of visa, you must provide proof of immunization. An immunization form must be completed and signed by your health-care provider, and submitted by May 26.
