Learn English at Harvard
The Institute for English Language Programs (IEL) offers day and evening classes in English at a variety of levels, from beginning to advanced.
Intensive daytime programs for international students
These intensive programs are full time. You must be at least 18 to enroll in all except the program for high school students.
- Tuition costs $4,950. There is a $50 registration fee.
- Classes meet daily Mondays through Fridays, 9 to 11 am and 1 to 3 pm. Homework is assigned daily.
- Housing costs $4,250. Adult students are encouraged to live on campus. High school students must live on campus.
- Visas and I-20s: If you are an international student, a visa is required for full-time study. You may request an I-20 for the F-1 student visa from the Summer School.

Evening program for local students
If you live in the Greater Boston area, you can take an evening class.
- Course tuition costs $725. There is a $50 registration fee.
- Class schedule: Classes meet two evenings each week, from 6:30 to 9 pm.
There is no on-campus housing for evening program students. Because this program is part time, I-20s for F-1 visas are not issued.

Theme for the summer
Each IEL course begins with a common reading that will be examined throughout the summer. In 2009, the theme is “200 Years of Darwin,” celebrating the bicentennial of Charles Darwin’s birth. Readings explore this theme’s educational, political, and environmental importance on a global scale.
