Enrollment in IEL classes is limited. Thus, early registration is encouraged.
Registration for an intensive program begins Tuesday, February 17. See Intensive Program Registration.
Registration for the evening program begins Friday, May 1. See Evening Program Registration.
The IEL curriculum is designed for students at five levels of proficiency. As part of the registration process, you take the Harvard English language placement test to determine your level.
Level A (beginning, test scores 1–30). Students at this level have limited English experience and need extensive practice and instruction in all aspects of the language.
Level B (intermediate, test scores 31–45). Students at this level have a basic knowledge of English, but need to further their speaking and writing skills and expand their vocabulary to develop a broad general competence in the language.
Level C (high intermediate, test scores 46–60). Students at this level wish to increase the accuracy, range, and complexity of their oral and written communication by using the language in many contexts and eliminating areas of weakness.
Level D (advanced, test scores 61–75). Students at this level already demonstrate an understanding of the language and wish to expand their proficiency for competent, extended performance in a variety of academic and professional circles.
Level E (high advanced, test scores 76–100). Students at this level are engaged in professional study or work that regularly challenges them to appreciate the nuances of English on the global scene and use the language with ease.
