Evening Program Registration

This page contains content from the Summer School 2009. For current information, visit the Harvard Summer School website at www.summer.harvard.edu.

Register for English language evening courses now until Tuesday, June 16.

To register, you must first take the English language placement test (if you did not take the post-test in a spring 2009 IEL course at the Extension School). Your placement test (or post-test) score includes your proficiency level. Once you know your test score and level, you register for evening courses that are offered at your level.

Registration and placement steps

Follow the steps below. If you have taken the post-test in a course, begin with step 3.

  1. Sign up for the placement test, beginning March 2.

Reserve a seat for one of the following tests by noon on the test day (there is no test fee; tests will be held in the Science Center, with specific locations to be announced):

    • Friday, May 1, 3 pm
    • Tuesday, May 26, 6 pm
    • Thursday, June 11, 6 pm

Test for late registration. If you did not take one of the above earlier placement tests, you may take the last test at 11 am on Sunday, June 21, so that you can register late (with $100 late fee) for classes at your level that still have space available. Please note that scores for this test may not be available until after classes begin, and some classes may be full. If you wish to take this test, please reserve a seat online, at no charge.

To reserve a seat, see the instructions on the online services login page. Take the test as early as possible. If you have difficulty reserving a seat, call (617) 495-4024, or visit the Information Services lobby at 51 Brattle Street, Mondays through Fridays, 9 am to 5 pm. You may sign up for only one test. To change your test date, first cancel your original reservation.

  2. Take the placement test.

Arrive for the test at least 30 minutes early. Bring photo identification and a copy of your test reservation page. The test takes approximately 2.5 hours.

  3. Check your placement test or post-test score online.

Scores are generally available online within five business days of the test. Log in to online services to view your score and proficiency level. Call (617) 495-4024 for assistance.

  4. Register for evening courses at the appropriate level.

Once you know your test score and proficiency level, you may register online for one or two courses that are offered at your level. See the evening program calendar for deadlines.

    • Online registration. Beginning May 1, you can register online with a credit card or e-check. Call (617) 495-4024 for assistance. Through online services, you can see which sections are available and the length of waitlists. Once registered, you are sent an e-mail confirmation.
    • Waitlists. If there is a waitlist for the section you want, you may add yourself to the waitlist  (a new section will be created when there are 10 students on the waitlist), or you may choose a different class that has no waitlist. Please note that you may not attend courses for which you are waitlisted and being on a waitlist does not guarantee that you will be registered in a section.
    • Mail-in registration. Complete the evening program registration form and send it to 51 Brattle Street. You may also deliver a form or drop it in the 24-hour registration box inside the gate.
    • Late registration. If you register late for evening courses—from Wednesday, June 17, through Thursday, June 25—you must pay in full with a $100 late fee.
  5. Refer to classroom and instructor information online.

  6. On Friday, June 19, log in to online services to see your classroom and instructor information. Select “Course Registration and Schedule” from the main menu, then select “View Course Schedule.” Call (617) 495-4024 for assistance.

Course Changes and Withdrawals

You may make course changes until the deadline if space is available. You may not change to a course at a different level. For deadlines to withdraw from a course for a tuition refund and have the course removed from your records, refer to the evening program calendar.
