Register for an intensive program early. After you register, you take the placement test on campus in June.
International students: If you will need an I-20 for an F-1 visa, request an I-20 when registering.
Register and request an I-20, if needed. An initial payment of the $50 registration fee is required.
If you request an I-20, you must submit the required prepayment and meet all other I-20 requirements by Thursday, April 30.
Make your full payment by Tuesday, May 26. If you pay late, between Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, June 25, you must also pay a $100 late fee. See program cost.
After registering, you will have a registration status of “waiting for placement.” Once all placement tests have been scored (on Monday, June 22) the Summer School will assign you to a class at the appropriate level.
On Saturday, June 20, you need to arrive on campus, check in, move into dorms (if living on campus), and pick up required program readings from the IEL Office (readings can also be picked up on Sunday).
On Sunday, June 21, at 11 am, you take the placement test in the Science Center to determine your level (placement test information below).
On the afternoon of Monday, June 22, log in to online services to see your test score, level, and orientation meeting information.
On Tuesday, June 23, attend the IEL orientation meeting and level meetings, where you take a written test.
On Wednesday, June 24, attend classes and complete an oral test.
You must take the English language placement test. The test lasts about two and a half hours and may be taken only once for the summer.
If you live outside of the Cambridge area, you must take the test on June 21 at 11 am. Be sure to arrive and check in on Saturday, June 20.
If you are in the Cambridge area before Opening Weekend, you may take the placement test at one of the following times instead of on June 21. These tests have limited seating, so you must log in to make a reservation by noon on the day of the test. These tests will be held in the Science Center; specific locations will be announced.
If you took the post-test in a spring 2009 Extension School IEL course you do not have to take the placement test for Summer School; your spring post-test score determines your level for the summer.
