Ukrainian Summer Institute

The Ukrainian Summer Institute is a rigorous seven-week academic program organized by Harvard Summer School and the Ukrainian Research Institute.
Participants enroll for 8 undergraduate or graduate credits, choosing from the following courses:
- UKRN S-Aab Beginning Ukrainian
- UKRN S-B Intermediate Ukrainian
- UKRN S-C Advanced Ukrainian
- UKRN S-103 Ukrainian Literature and Popular Culture
- UKRN S-124 Soviet Ukrainian History, 1914–1991
- UKRN S-127 Ukraine as Linguistic Battleground
Academic offerings are supplemented with guest lectures by prominent faculty, roundtable discussions with visiting scholars on current events in Ukraine, and cultural presentations, such as screenings of contemporary Ukrainian films and readings by Ukrainian authors.
Application
You must be 19 years old or have completed one year of college to apply. Exceptional high school students may be considered through the Secondary School Program. Admission is based on your academic record, a letter of recommendation, and an essay.
To apply, submit the following:
- Summer School registration form (see How to Register)
- Nonrefundable $50 registration fee (payable to Harvard Summer School)
- Separate Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute application form (available on the institute’s website or by calling the office)
- Supplementary materials listed on the application form
Deadlines
The application deadlines are as follows:
- Monday, March 16, for applicants requesting financial aid
- Monday, March 16, for international students requesting I-20 visas to come to the United States
- Tuesday, May 26, for all other students
International students: You must meet the English proficiency requirement and include Harvard Summer School Form F with your application.

Tuition
If you are accepted to the program, you pay the reduced tuition rate of $2,970 for 8 credits (compared to the typical Summer School rate of $4,950 for 8 credits). Scholarships lowering tuition costs further are available on a merit basis.
