Understand prerequisites and credit-level options, placement tests, rules regarding limited-enrollment courses, and transfer credit.
You are responsible for ensuring that you are prepared for courses by meeting all prerequisites and taking all required placement tests.
Many courses are available at all three levels. For detailed information about credit levels and full- and part-time study, see Credit and Enrollment Status.
Most courses are open admission, which means no transcripts or letters of recommendation are required. Prerequisites listed in a course description are meant help you determine whether you have the academic background necessary to take the course.
English proficiency is required in all courses except those in the Institute for English Language Programs.
Placement tests are required for Institute for English Language Programs (IEL) courses, some economics and mathematics courses, and graduate proseminars.
Courses with enrollment limits fill on a first-come, first-served basis. Learn more about our limited-enrollment courses and waitlists.
Summer School credits can be applied toward degrees at most colleges and universities.
Enrollment in Summer School courses does not imply admission to any other Harvard school.
