Harvard Summer Program in Barcelona, Spain
Harvard Summer Program in
Barcelona, Spain
Spanish language and cultural history in one of Spain’s preeminent cities.
Faculty: Luis Fernandez Cifuentes
Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain, offers a blend of industriousness and entertainment that has attracted the most sophisticated travelers, artists, and professionals of the past 2 centuries. Located on the Mediterranean, 150 kilometers from France and 621 kilometers from Madrid, Barcelona boasts sun-drenched beaches and lush mountains, a vibrant medieval quarter, a nineteenth-century urban expansion of groundbreaking design, and world-class modern and postmodern architecture, as well as an impressive array of museums, theaters, sports venues, parks, and promenades.
Cosmopolitan and casual, bilingual (Spanish-Catalan) and multicultural, it is a city rich with history and art, where Columbus, Gaudí, Miró, and Picasso still figure prominently. Students in this program do coursework on the cultural history of the Catalan metropolis, as well as advanced study of Spanish language, literature, film, music, art, and architecture.
Course of study
SPAN S-74 Study Abroad in Barcelona, Spain: Barcelona, Itinerarios de una modernidad incesante (32670)
Luis Fernandez Cifuentes.
(8 credits: UN, GR) Limited enrollment
This course (conducted entirely in Spanish) is a historical survey of Barcelona's continuous and mostly successful growth toward modernity, as reflected in literature, film, painting, sculpture, music, urban planning, architecture, and social and political history. The course—organized primarily around 14 specific itineraries—devotes the first week to medieval and premodern Barcelona, and the following 6 weeks to Barcelona's evolution as a modern metropolis, from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution to the city's postmodern accomplishments in architecture and industrial design. A full day's trip to Dalí's world and a number of optional weekend excursions complete the program.
Prerequisites: 2 years of college-level Spanish or the equivalent; for Harvard students, completion of Spanish 40 or equivalent.
