Distance Education Policies
All Summer School policies, procedures, and deadlines apply to distance education students.
If you request an I-20 to attend the Summer School, see International Students for limitations on distance education.
High school students accepted to the Secondary School Program may register for 1 or 2 distance education courses.
Harvard College students interested in transferring Summer School courses should read about taking on-campus courses with a distance option on the Harvard College Academic Credit page.
The following additional policies and procedures apply if you are a distance education student:
- You are responsible for ensuring that you have the necessary computer hardware and software (see the requirements listed on Online Video Courses), including any course-specific software needed to complete course assignments. You must check the course website to determine if any special software is needed. Harvard University does not provide equipment or software.
- You must have Internet access from your home or office available throughout the summer.
- Lecture videos are available only to registered students; lectures are password protected after June 30.
- Recorded lectures are available after the end of the summer term if you receive an extension of time (EXT) for an online course or are approved for a make-up final exam.
-
Most distance course have exams. Your instructor has the option to give the class either an online exam or a timed and proctored exam. If your course has an online exam, you do not need to come to campus to take the exam. You access it through the course website. If your course has a timed and proctored exam and your primary residence during the summer session is in the 6-state New England area (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont), you are expected to take your exam on campus as scheduled. You may call Academic Services, (617) 495-0977, if you have questions. If you live outside New England, you may choose to travel to campus for your exam or arrange to take it in absentia with a proctor. See complete guidelines in Proctored Exams. Your instructor will inform the class about the format of your exams.
