Christian Ireland preserved and reshaped pagan myth and epic, as well as native social structures and customs. Later Irish folk tradition reflects this complex inheritance. Poetry and music are highly valued in both early and later tradition. Students examine topics such as legends of goddesses and women saints; Ireland's sacred geography; deities, fairies, and heroes; and folk ritual. (4 credits)
