JAPA S-Bab Elementary Japanese I, II (32813)

This introductory course in the basic vocabulary and grammatical patterns of Japanese emphasizes all four language skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—and covers hiragana, katakana, and roughly 200 kanji. In class, grammar introduction is followed by pattern drills and conversation practice in smaller sections. This is an intensive course requiring high motivation. In addition to regularly scheduled class, students must meet the instructor for individual instruction. (8 credits)
JAPA S-C Practical Japanese (32880)
Class times: Mondays, Wednesdays, 6:30-9:30 pm.
Course tuition: noncredit and undergraduate credit $2,640.
Limited enrollment.
This course is designed for people with little or no background in Japanese. Students develop basic conversational skills as well as basic reading skills in daily life situations. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, students are able to have survival-level conversations and to recognize simple writing. (4 credits)
JAPA S-120 Intermediate Japanese (32812)
Class times: Mondays-Fridays, 8:30 am-12:30 pm.
Course tuition: noncredit, undergraduate, and graduate credit $5,400.

This course is designed for students who have a solid background in basic grammar, equivalent to one year of study at Harvard. It is expected that students have basic speaking and listening comprehension skills as well as reading and writing ability in hiragana, katakana and approximately 180 kanji in context. Prerequisite: JAPA S-Bab or the equivalent of one year of college-level Japanese. Students must pass a placement test given the first day of class. (8 credits)
