Ukrainian Summer Institute
A rigorous 7-week academic program in Ukrainian language and culture.
The Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute offers Ukrainian language courses at the beginning and advanced levels, as well as courses in Ukrainian literature, history, political science, linguistics, art, or culture. Special activities include cultural events and guest lectures by prominent faculty and invited speakers.
Curriculum
You enroll for 4 or 8 undergraduate or graduate credits, choosing from the following courses:
- UKRN S-G Ukrainian for Reading Knowledge
- UKRN S-AAB Beginning Ukrainian
- UKRN S-101 Twentieth-Century Ukrainian Literature: Rethinking the Canon
- UKRN S-128 Contemporary Ukraine: History, Geography, and Political Thought
Academic offerings are supplemented with guest lectures by prominent faculty, roundtable discussions with visiting scholars on current events in Ukraine, and cultural presentations, such as screenings of contemporary Ukrainian films and readings by Ukrainian authors.

Application
You must be 19 years old or have completed 1 year of college to apply. Exceptional high school students may be considered through the Secondary School Program. Admission is based on your academic record, a letter of recommendation, and an essay.
To apply, submit the following (address provided on the form):
- The Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute application form (available on the institute’s website or by calling the office).
- Supplementary materials listed on the application form, including an official TOEFL or IELTS score if English is not your primary language. Read detailed information about the English proficiency requirement.
Application deadlines
- Friday, February 3, for applicants applying for Foreign Language and Area Studies funding.
- Friday, March 2, for applicants requesting financial aid.
- Wednesday, April 11, for international students requesting an I-20 certificate for the F-1 student visa from Harvard Summer School.
- Monday, May 21, for all other students (this is also the deadline for course registration, housing requests, and full payment to Harvard Summer School. See the calendar for all dates).
Course registration, housing, and payment
After you are admitted:
- Register for your Ukrainian courses (see How to Register).
- International students requesting an I-20 certificate for the F-1 student visa from Harvard Summer School: meet all I-20 requirements no later than Monday, May 7.
- Pay the nonrefundable Harvard Summer School $50 registration fee and applicable deposit ($1,500 if requesting an I-20; $200 if not requesting an I-20) when registering.
- Make full payment of tuition, housing (if applicable), and all other fees no later than Monday, May 21. See the Summer School calendar for other important dates and deadlines.
