Common questions
Course Options and Requirements
Consider the following when you register for Harvard Summer School courses.
English proficiency requirement
If English is not your primary language, you need to provide proof of English proficiency (through satisfactory TOEFL or IELTS scores) for all courses except those in the Institute for English Language Programs.
Placement tests and prerequisites
Placement tests are required for Institute for English Language Programs (IEL) courses, some economics and mathematics courses, some management courses, and some graduate proseminars.
In addition, many course descriptions include recommended prerequisites. You are not required to prove that you have met these, but it is your responsibility to be adequately prepared for your courses.
You should also read the Summer School student responsibilities information, which covers issues like academic integrity.
Undergraduate, graduate, or noncredit status
Many courses are available at all 3 levels. For detailed information about credit levels, see Undergraduate, Graduate, and Noncredit Status.
Limited-enrollment courses and waitlists
Courses with enrollment limits fill quickly. Learn more about our limited-enrollment courses and find waitlist tips.
Full- and part-time study
To be enrolled full time, you must be registered for 8 undergraduate or graduate credits or in a full-time intensive English language program. You cannot enroll for more than 8 credits for undergraduate or graduate credit. See Full- and Part-time Study.
Transfer credit
Summer School credits can be applied toward degrees at most colleges and universities.
