Math Placement Test

Math Placement Test

The math placement test is required or recommended for a number of math courses. If a course requires or recommends this test, it is noted in the prerequisites of the course description. The following information applies to all students registered for credit or noncredit in those courses.

Required Test (CHANGES TO 2020 FORMAT)

The Math Placement Test will be available online starting April 27 as a self-diagnostic assessment for courses that require it. The test will not take place in-person on the Harvard campus this summer.

If you are interested in registering for MATH S-Ar, MATH S-1a, MATH S-1b, or MATH S-1ab, take the test online between Monday, April 27 and Saturday, June 20 (except 2 to 2:30 am eastern time). You receive your results upon completing the test. Please keep a copy of your test results for your records.

Recommended Test

If you register for a course for which the math placement test is recommended, take the test online any time between Monday, April 27 and Saturday, June 20 (except 2 to 2:30 am eastern time). You receive your score upon completing the test. Please keep a copy of your test results for your records. Based on your results, if you would like to change your course, do so by the course changes deadline.

Registration

If you plan to register for MATH S-Ar, MATH S-1a, MATH S-1b, or MATH S-1ab, you should take the online test before registering for your course. If you do not place into the desired course, please contact support@math-placement.dce.harvard.edu for advice and specific recommendations after you have taken the test.

If you have already registered for MATH S-Ar, MATH S-1a, MATH S-1b, or MATH S-1ab, you should take the test online as soon as possible starting April 27. If you do not place into the desired course after taking the test, you should drop your course by the course changes deadline and contact support@math-placement.dce.harvard.edu for advice and specific recommendations.

You are responsible for assessing your test performance and for making any necessary registration and course changes, including course drops, based on your results.

Calculators

Some math courses require the use of a graphing calculator. However, they are not allowed while taking the placement test.
