Web-Conference Technology Guidelines

Prepare to Use the Software

Courses that use web conferencing for class meetings and/or section meetings use Zoom.

All first-time students in a course using Zoom must learn to use the software before their first class. Please go to the web conference information page to find upcoming training dates and times. You may also follow the links below to learn the software. 

The URL for web conference classrooms is available on password-protected course websites a week before the start of classes. Course teaching staff will provide students with the URL for web conference classrooms for section meetings.

Participation Requirements

1. Computer minimum specifications:


  • 2GHz or faster processor, 8GB RAM
  • Windows 8 or 10
  • Web Browsers (versions): Chrome v50 or later, Firefox v45 or later


  • 2GHz or faster processor, 8GB RAM
  • Mac OS 10.10 and 10.11
  • Web Browsers (versions): Chrome v50 or later, Firefox v45 or later, Safari v8 or later

We do not support

  • Beta versions of any software
  • Taking courses or viewing videos on mobile devices
  • Linux/Chromebook

2. Internet Speeds 

Download/upload: minimum 4 Mbps, wired connection recommended. 
(Course staff minimum is 5 Mbps.)

3. Video

Students are required to use a webcam during class.

4. Audio

Be prepared to use a microphone during class. We recommend a Logitech H390 headset, but any USB headset should be adequate. Do not use a microphone that is built into a laptop.

5. Student Conduct

Students are expected to join from a suitable, quiet location with a computer that permits full participation in the class activities. Please review the full Participation and Attendance requirements.

Using Zoom

Zoom will automatically download when a user connects to the correct URL. In most cases, an applet will open upon download. If your web browser prohibits the auto-launch please double-click on the downloaded file.

If this is your first Zoom course, you must complete a training session before the first class. Either attend a live training session or watch our training video.
